Rumors are abound that Asus will introduce a new touch screen laptop in Q1 of 2009. What’s interesting about this rumor is the fact that the new notebook will not ship with a physical QWERTY keyboard. Rather, the notebook will have two displays with the lower display acting as a virtual keyboard. The new notebook is expected to run on Windows 7 only and specialized software will be required to activate the virtual keyboard.
The idea of a virtual keyboard is not new, it is something that has been tossed around for years. The only issue with the Q1 2009 release date is that Windows 7 is not expected until 2010. Putting that aside, it would not be surprising to see virtual technology being introduced into the notebook market, although you have to wonder if this notebook will draw more power to activate both LEDs.
