The Jersey, The MoMa, The Ladies’ Mile, The Chelsea, The Hipster, The Olde Times Sq, The Villager, The Wall Street, The Coffee Cup, with names like this, you’d never expect that they are referring to the names of bike racks, but that is exactly what it is.
These 9 bike racks are the designs of David Byrne and are scattered throughout New York city in an agreement made between the designer, the city of New York and PaceWildenstein. It is hoped that these creative designs will spark interest in cycling while also adding artwork throughout the city.
According to Commissioner Sadik-Khan “By bringing attractive yet functional sculptures to our streets, we are elevating the profile of cycling, and we believe that more and more people will begin to think about cycling as a mode of transportation, and not just a mode of recreation.”
What I like about these bike racks is that they are theme based and reflect the nature of the neighborhood in which they have been installed. The dollar sign, called “Wall Street” would be where else but on Wall Street, while the guitar design, “Hipster” is situated in Williamsburg, an area known for it’s music.
These nine temporary bike racks, will remain in their current locations for a period of nine months, after which they will be removed.
