Most of the reports that we see these days show that Google’s Android operating system has a dominant share of the market with Apple holding it’s own in second spot. When you consider that Android can be found on mobile phones made by a variety of different phone makers whereas iOS is only found on Apple products, it makes this next story eye opening.
In the third quarter of last year, Android owned 60% of the market whereas Apple had 26% of the share. That was quite a difference, but surprisingly enough, Apple had managed to significantly close the gap within a single quarter. According to the numbers that are available from NPD, in the last quarter, Android only had 4% more market share then Apple with Android having 47% of the market and Apple at 43%
The biggest reason as to how Apple managed to close the gap so quickly would have to be the launch of their iPhone 4S. Apple’s newest smartphone with the voice attendant Siri pushed Apple’s numbers up during the months of October and November. Apple fans had known for a while that a new iPhone model was on the way and as such, held off their purchase until the latest and greatest device was available. Now that the iPhone 4S is available on three big US mobile networks, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, many customers have had an option to pick-up the iPhone 4S without having to switch to another network.
As it stands now, Apple is just 4% behind Android when it comes to market share. We’ll need to wait until the December numbers are out before we can access whether Apple was able to close the gap even further.
