Recently, Apple pushed out their latest iOS update in iOS 4.3. When the new version came out, it introduced a new feature in the form of personal hotspots. This feature allowed iPhone 4 users to utilize their smartphone as a personal wireless hotspot that could be used to network connect up to 3 devices.
What was not known until recently is that when an iPad 1 or an iPad 2 makes a 802.11 wireless connection to this hotspot, the GPS information is shared allowing users to locate their position on a map. Before iOS 4.3 a WiFi iPad was unable to receive GPS data because the A-GPS module was only integrated in the 3G iPad. Bundling this feature with the latest update provides greater flexibility and convenience to iPad users who previously did not have access to this service. If there is a downside to this feature, it would have to be that this is not real time or near real time GPS information like what we find on a 3G enabled iPad. Rather, the iPhone acts as a pass through, sending a GPS signal every 60 seconds or thereabouts.
