Apple To Power New Devices With iPhone OS

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has recently posted a job ad in search of an Engineering Manager (Platform Bring-Up) who’s role is to manage the Core Platform team. This functional team is responsible for low level platform architecture, drivers and firmware as well as to work on new hardware platforms.

In reading the full job ad, many feel that Apple is looking to port their iPhone OS to “new platforms and prototype systems” and that these systems will be powered by “custom silicon” or Apple’s A4 processor that is found in the Apple iPad.

The most significant part of the job posting is the successful candidate will work on a “range of hardware platforms, including iPhone & iPod,” implying that are other products are in the works with the prime candidate being Apple TV.

The idea of running an iPhone OS on Apple TV would make a lot of sense. Apple TV already runs a version of the Mac OS X. Introducing a fresh OS with a custom user interface would make Apple TV more attractive, user friendly as well as open up the possibility of future applications and iTunes accessibility.

Apple TV is just one example of a device that would benefit from the new OS. Other candidates in the running include a home server, Mac Mini or Macbook Air.
