Some sleuthing Apple fans have recently uncovered iSlate.com, a domain that Apple had bought over two years ago. It’s easy to start rumors that the much-awaited Apple Tablet will be named iSlate, but their findings does support the idea.
ISlate.com’s “Whois” record tells us that Apple bought it back in 2007, and transferred the address to the registrar MarkMonitor.com, which handles domain registrations for Apple and other companies. Possibly to hide products before release?
Further sleuthing uncovered the fact that iSlate.com was registered as trademark by Slate Computing, a supposedly Delaware-based company, in 2006. Googling doesn’t return such a company, so it’s suggested that Slate Computing is a dummy company used to hide Apple, the real trademark owner. Apple has done this trick before with the iPhone, hiding it behind the bogus “Ocean Telecom Services.”
If the Apple Tablet really is set to be released in January 2010, then we don’t have much longer to wait whether the rumors are true. If the tablet DOES come out as “iSlate,” we can thank the guys at MacRumors for letting us guess it.
