One of the biggest sore points with the Apple iPhone was the unbelievably stringent offerings made by AT&T. Sling Media’s SlingPlayer App, for instance, has been trying for a while to stream into iPhones via 3G, instead of just relying on WiFi connections. AT&T had previously and repeatedly said no to such an idea, arguing that the 3G network is already too crowded. Now, AT&T seems to have changed its mind.
In a move that many people see as a “gimme” to Apple, AT&T is now allowing the SlingPlayer App to stream over 3G. There’s been talk that Apple and AT&T’s relationship with each other isn’t really in the best of health, so AT&T may be looking for ways to keep the lucrative partnership running.
While this should be good news for iPhone users, it should also be noted that if the SlingPlayer App does clog the 3G network, AT&T just might start charging extra for the data usage. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen.
SlingPlayer is now available on iTunes, but it’ll probably be another week or so before it becomes fully functional over 3G. It’s likely to be a hit with iPhone users, even with the $30 price tag it’ll come with.
