The Apple [AAPL] iPhone finally reached Chinese shores last weekend, but word has it that it’s received “lukewarm” reception from the tech-savvy Chinese. Apparently while there was a sizeable crowd turning out to welcome the iPhone, it wasn’t nearly as boisterous as the crowds that greeted the iPhone in other countries, such as in the US and Japan.
There weren’t many sellouts in Beijing’s shops over the weekend. While many Chinese braved the rainy weather to get their hands on the world’s leading smartphone, they were noticeably subdued and didn’t seem as excited as their American and Japanese counterparts.
It’s to be expected, I guess. After all, it’s China — before the iPhone reached its shores, there have already been a few million gray market iPhones in service. Many of the Chinese also weren’t very happy with the pricing, which were absurdly high for most — a sentiment reflected in many other countries in the region.
What’s more, there has also been reports that users were unhappy with the fact that the new iPhones had no Wi-Fi capability. A bumpy introduction to China at best, but I’ve a feeling the iPhone will bounce back and become one of the country’s more popular smartphones in the near future. It always seems to.
