Plants vs Zombies is a a video game developed by PopCap Games which debuted as a PC/Mac game in May 2009. As with many of PopCap Games other properties, Plants vs Zombies became a popular game very quickly, leading the privately owned gaming company to port their property to handheld devices.
One of those handheld devices was the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and some 9 days ago, Plants vs Zombies was released as an iPhone app. Since its launch date, 300,000 copies of this console game have been sold, setting a new record for the Apple app store and at the same time, generating $1 million in sales for its developer. The iPhone game which retails for $2.99, somewhat higher then other available paid apps, ranked as the top selling game for 8 days after its official release.
Unlike the gory violence of other video games, Plants vs Zombies takes a different approach to the gaming world with an almost cartoon like overtone. The game falls under the Tower Defense niche with the objective being to setup shooting plants around the house to confront the zombie attacks.
This is not the first time that PopCap has seen success with iPhone applications as previously, the company had released their puzzle game Bejeweled 2 for this platform, only to see it to achieve another first for the app store, namely 3 million downloads.
