Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has confirmed that they have renamed their iPhone operating system to iOS. If the moniker iOS sounds familiar, it’s because the trademark belongs to Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) who has used the term to reference their network infrastructure software.
This time around though, Apple has come to an agreement with Cisco to license the term which Apple will be using to replace the phrase ‘iPhone OS’. iOS is Apple’s latest OS that will power both the newly revealed iPhone 4 as well as earlier models. By coming to terms with Cisco, Apple has avoided a repeat incident of trademark infringement, something the Cupertino based company faced in 2007 when they released the iPhone, a name which Cisco said they had owned since 2000.
