Apple iPad Pre-Orders Start February 25th?

During the Apple media event in San Francisco where CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPad, Apple’s tablet computer, he mentioned that the the WiFi edition would ship in about 60 days which would indicate availability in late March.

However, online sources are speculating that pre-orders for the iPad may begin as early as next week, with some pinpointing the exact date to February 25th. It’s not without merit that the WiFi version of the iPad would be available on a pre-order basis as unlike the 3G version, this one does not require any long term binding contracts that need to be signed although FCC approval would be necessary before they do officially go on sale.

The Apple iPad is supposed to fit that niche, somewhere between a desktop computer and a small mobile device. On launch, iPad reviews were mixed and many wondered if consumers wanted or really needed one. I’m sure if pre-orders were to begin next week, thousands will plunk down their hard earned money to buy one and then down the road make that decision of whether it was an impulse buy or a necessity.

One of the interesting suggestions circulating is whether Apple will throw in some unannounced software applications just before the availability date to create even more buzz. The idea is not without merit as Apple did do exactly this with the first edition iPhone which included YouTube support just nine days prior to its launch date.
