Apple has recently posted their service plan on how they intend to address the issue of a dead battery. The service plan is a bit of a surprise and a complete opposite to the plan that is currently in place for a failing iPhone battery.
If your iPad happens to have a dead battery, Apple will not replace just the battery. Rather, they will swap your entire iPad out. Apple has decided that it’s not efficient to have to crack the iPad case open to swap the battery. It’s not exactly clear as to if Apple will provide you with a brand new iPad or a refurbished one which in itself poses its own challenges.
The exact verbiage in the service contract is as follows:
If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.
Users will be responsible for the $99 service fee associated with this one week turnaround service. Users will also have to ensure that a data backup of any personal data they wish to retain is done prior to shipping their iPad as Apple will not accept responsibility for this task.
This to is addressed in their service plan:
No. You will receive a replacement iPad that will not contain any of your personal data. Before you submit your iPad for service, it is important to sync your iPad with iTunes to back up your contacts, calendars, email account settings, bookmarks, apps, etc. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information when servicing your iPad.
