Garmin and Asus have jointly developed a new Google Android 1.6 powered smartphone called the A50. The new mobile phone goes by the tagline “Location is relevant to everything you do” and includes a turn by turn navigation system with Garmin navigation as well as voice prompts offering directional service while driving or on foot.

In addition to the GPS functions, the A50 sports a 3.5″ HVGA resolution capacitive touchscreen display with a finger friendly UI, an onscreen QWERTY keyboard, 4GB internal memory that can be expanded through the microSD card slot, 3MP digital camera with autofocus and geo-tagging features as well as a synchronization function that is compatible with Microsoft Exchange Server, allowing enterprise users to synchronize calender bookings, contact information and personal email.

As an Android handset, the mobile phone, like others before it, does have access to a sleuth of Google services such as Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search with Voice and contacts. Of course, full access to the Android marketplace is also available, thereby allowing consumers to enhance functionality further through additional application downloads.

The A50 will be showcased at next weeks Mobile World Congress after which a European release is scheduled within the first six months of 2010. Pricing has not been disclosed but may be available next week.
