In its never ending battle with Intel, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has released its quad core Athlon II X4 CPU. Previously known as Propus, the new chip is priced at under $100 US, making it the cheapest quad core processor on the market. Two versions of the X4 are available; there is the 620 at $99 and the 630 at $122.
Considering our love for good bargains, you can bet that these processors will quickly find themselves making their way into new computers. Reviews around the web are somewhat mixed at this time.
The X4 lacks L3 cache memory and it’s certainly not the fastest quad core available on the market. However, it’s expected that the X4 will still offer high performance in multi-threaded applications and games designed for DirectX 11/Windows 7.
