Microsoft DirectX 11 is going to set the standard for gaming and computing when Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, goes live in just under a month from now, and AMD will be launching a new series of graphics cards that will support it. Dubbed the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series, AMD’s next-generation graphics cards should stretch the limits of any user’s computing experience.

For now, AMD plans on releasing two cards – the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and 5870. Each card comes with 1GB GDDR5 memory, and will let users utilize multiple displays more easily and accelerate work and play with ATI Stream technology.

AMD’s 5800 series can deliver up to 2.72 teraflops of computing power, which lets users play the newest DirectX 11 games with ease. They’re also backwards compatible, so DirectX 9, 10, 10.1, and OpenGL titles can also be played, either in single-card configuration or with multiple cards (with ATI CrossFireX technology).

Most of the big names in the industry already support AMD’s latest-generation graphics cards, so running your old applications on the new graphics cards should be seamless.
