Like all major manufacturers, Amazon has had its own nemesis in the highly competitive world of ebook readers. Yes, there are the other vendors that create dedicated book readers, but Amazon has also been challenged by Apple and their iPad.
We’ve seen the two go head to head on a number of different issues with the two companies trying to highlight the advantages of their product over the other. In this case, we’ve seen comments about one working better in natural sunlight while the other doesn’t, we’ve seen comments made about how one is better suited for someone with a tech background while the other caters to the average person.
The most recent shot was just recently fired by Amazon when they created their own App store that would be for the Android operating system only. With Amazon heavily into this niche, the only thing that they really needed was a tablet computer and this now seems to be in the works. Based upon the information available, Amazon is now working with Quanta Computer to have approximately 700k-800k tablets manufactured and delivered each month. These new tablets could come as early as in the last six months of this year and if the name Quanta Computer sounds familiar, it’s because they already have deals in place with both Sony and RIM. Amazon is also using a business tactic that we see Apple employ all the time and that is, Amazon is preparing to buy the full touch screen display inventory of one manufacturer.
In terms of competing with Apple and their iPad 2, Amazon has two responses. The first is a price reduction on their Amazon Kindle so as to grow their markets beyond Europe and North America and the second is to develop a tablet that will not only compete with Apple, but also with Barnes and Noble.
