Amazon’s new Kindle Fire still hasn’t been launched globally just yet, but there is already talk that the company is planning on launching a new device next year. The new device will take on the Kindle brand name and will be a smartphone.
Just like how the Amazon Kindle entered the market with a low entry price, thereby undercutting the iPad, the Kindle phone is expected to do exactly the same thing to the iPhone. Based upon an investor’s note that was sent out by Kevin Chang who is with Citigroup, it is believed that Amazon will work with Foxconn to manufacture the new devices. Foxconn is also the same company that Apple has engaged for their iPhone.
If all goes according to plan, we can expect to see the new Amazon phone launch towards the end of next year. Understandably, details are very few at this time, but considering that Amazon went with Android as the operating system of choice for the Kindle Fire, it’s believed that they will also make use of Android on their new phone. There are no early images or renderings of what this Amazon device might look like, but of course this could change with a leak here or there. Chang however does believe that this phone will most likely make use of the Texas Instrument OMAP 4 processor.
The phone will have a build cost of $150-$170 US and Amazon will be selling the device around this price point which is really good news for customers looking for a good deal.
