Apple already owns the biggest slice of the tablet pie but in an attempt to capture more market share away from the smaller screen competitor tablets, the Cupertino company elected to launch their own small screen iPad Mini.
Although analysts were pleased to see the launch of this iOS tablet, there were still many that questioned the price point that Apple had set. The entry point to buy the iPad Mini is $329 and some have felt that Apple has priced their device to high and this will cause budget minded customers to pass on this tablet. It’s been about a week since we heard about the iPad mini and one of the interesting things to see was just what, if any impact, has this device had on Amazon Kindle sales.
In that regard, Amazon has revealed that Kindle sales have been strong with last Wednesday being their best sale day for the Kindle Fire HD which retails for $199. In fact, last Wednesday, Amazon saw a three fold increase in Kindle HD sales week over week. This effect is exactly opposite of what Apple would have wanted but what it does suggest is that some customers delayed their purchasing decisions until last Tuesday to see what the iPad mini was all about and having heard about it, decided to buy a Kindle HD on Wednesday. Of course, Amazon never provides us with actual numbers of units sold, so we’re not sure just how many Kindle devices have been sold. For their part though, Apple has also confirmed that pre-orders for some versions of the iPad mini have been so strong that they sold out.
