Leave it to the Japanese to lead the world in consumer robotics. The Japanese department store Sogo & Seibu will soon make Actroids — life-size humanoid robots that look and talk like you — available to the buying public. The Japanese may be thrilled at this offering, but the rest of us may be wondering just what we’d be buying one of these for.
Apparently the guys at Sogo & Seibu aren’t that sure, either — it’s only going to offer two (2) robots for now. They’ll be accepting orders at their department stores beginning next month, and if more than two people are interested in getting one, production will definitely pick up.
The robots themselves are made of silicon, and will only be able to move their upper bodies. You’ll also be able to record your own voice and let them “speak.”
The geniuses behind the Actroids are — who else — Kokoro, who four years ago caused a sensation at the 2005 Aichi Expo with their realistic androids who gave directions around the Expo.
If you’re interested in getting one, make sure you drop us a line and tell us why. Also, be ready to shell out around US$225,000 for your own doppelganger.
