Get ready for tablet wars which will begin on November 23rd. That’s the date that Acer will be holding a press conference in New York city to announce the launch of several tablet computers. At last count, it looks like at least three Gingerbread tablets are scheduled for launch.
It was expected that Acer would wait until Gingerbread was available before their tablets went live and the timing of a late November press conference may coincide with the release of the new Google Android OS. Earlier this year, there was some discussion that Acer would launch tablets with Froyo or Android 2.2 but after hearing that this version of Android was not well optimized for tablet computers, Acer may have elected to delay their launch slightly.
Although it’s not known the exact number of Acer tablets that are coming, we do expect to see at least three models: 5-inch, 7-inch and a 10-inch. Additionally, Android may not be the only OS under consideration as there is always the prospect of a Windows 7 tablet. Regardless of which tablet models they announce next month, those that are looking at buying a tablet such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab may find it of benefit to hold off their purchasing decision just to see what Acer brings to the table.
For prices, expect to see the Acer tablets sell for somewhere between $299 and $699 depending upon screen size and specific features that are included with each model. We should also find out on November 23rd if any of these tablets will be subsidized by the mobile carriers through the use of mobile service plans.
