3TB Seagate Hard Drives Coming This Year

Seagate has confirmed that they are in the process of developing a 3TB disk drive which they plan to launch “later this year.” The new hard drive will offer a storage capacity which will be 33% largest then Seagate’s largest hard drive available today which is 2TB in size.

When the 3TB drive does launch, it will certainly result in a price drop on the 2TB drives, which is expected and commonly seen as new technology becomes available. One of the challenges to be seen with the 3TB drives is the Logical Block Addressing (LBA) is not standard so users will need to perform a bios upgrade as well as possibly install new drivers. In addition, there is the potential that Windows XP users may not see the 3TB at all and if they do, they may only be able to access a percentage of it rather then the full drive space.

In order to make use of the entire drive, users will need to be on either Windows 7, 64-bit Windows Vista or a “modified” Linux distribution.
