The Star Wars movie franchise is looking to be made over again. Get ready for Star Wars 3D in 2012. There will probably many die hard Star Wars fans that will sit through a 3D version of this highly popular series and it’s very likely that the 2012 release could be a game changer for 3D movies.
When Star Wars was released, it was obviously filmed in 2D. High quality 3D movies require 2 cameras that film the action from slightly different angles to create the necessary 3D effect. When done correctly, the imagery can be amazing, think Avatar. However, on the other side of the spectrum, we also have what are really B-movies like Piranha 3D and Clash of the Titans, neither of which had the big movie budgets to film the movies correctly and it shows in the final product.
The conversion from 2D to 3D is met with some skepticism by top directors like James Cameron, but according to John Knoll from ILM, Star Wars 3D will be different. A lot of effort and time will go into converting Star Wars from 2D to 3D and it is because of this that the release date is set for 2012.
If Star Wars 3D becomes an instant hit, we could see other movie franchises rekindled such as Aliens, Indiana Jones, and the Terminator. How about Arnold Schwarzenegger in 3D? I’m up to seeing how Star Wars 3D will turn out, but I hate the idea of having to sit through another movie with Jar Jar Binks.
