2009 Chrylser cars to get 3G Wifi internet

Chrysler plans to officially announce on Thursday that with their 2009 lineup of cars, they plan to offer an optional 3G wireless internet service. This will make Chrysler the first automaker to offer such a service, and it is there hope that this service will assist them in reversing the tide of poor results over the last few quarters.

The benefits of such a service is certainly great, technology can really assist in daily life. Stuck in rush hour, check your email, google directions to where your going out for dinner tonight, watch some youtube videos.

All kidding aside, the biggest hurdle with this technology is how are you going to prevent the driver from surfing the information highway while he’s traveling down the highway at 60 mph. Chrysler clearly does state that internet is meant only for passengers, but we all know that there will be a few drivers that will be tempted to use this service while driving.

Heck, if you’re a pedestrian, you’ve probably had a few close calls crossing the street when the driver in a car wasn’t paying attention while they were on the cell phone, and now it’s the internet.

Accidents due to cell phone usage while driving has been growing at an alarming rate and there is legislation underway in many parts to ban the use of cell phones without a hands free option. The idea of wireless internet is great, I think there will need to be some means of ensuring drivers can’t use it while driving.
