Motorola Droid Smartphone sales

On opening weekend, Verizon sold 100,000 Motorola Droid smartphones and according to Mark McKechnie of Broadpoint AmTech, there are still 100,000 units left unsold. The US national launch of Droid was done quietly and with little fanfare. In contrast, the global launch of the Apple iPhone 3GS in June 09 was done with considerable hype. This resulted in high demand and anticipation that ultimately resulted in 1 million units being sold on opening weekend.

However, the news is not as gloomy as it sounds. In fact, McKechnie looks at the results as “encouraging” and is confident that 1 million Android based phones will sell before the end of the year. Most of these additional sales will be in the form of Droid, but the Cliq at T-Mobile and international sales of the Milestone and Dext will also help with the bottom line. McKechnie goes on to say that sales could reach 10 million by 2010.
